There are a lot of naturally occurring chemicals in chocolate that are either good for us or affect our mood. A substance in chocolate called theobromine triggers the release of endorphins, which are chemicals produced by the brain, that act like a natural antidepressant and can temporarily relieve the blues.

Regardless of what your parents or grandparents may still say, studies in the past twenty years have eliminated chocolate as a cause of acne. One of chocolate’s active ingredients, theobromine, suppresses activity in the vagus nerve, which causes coughing. According to a study published in a recent issue of The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology journal, it was one-third more effective at stopping a persistent cough than a placebo.
Suggested serving size: One 50-gram bar of dark chocolate or two cups (500 mL) of hot cocoa (made with real cocoa, not hot chocolate mix) per day.
4) Cocoa Prevents Cavities
You probably think chocolate is full of sugar or artificial sweetener, and it isn’t good for our teeth. Well, it is, but it doesn’t have to be. Pure cocoa can actually help prevent tooth decay. Certain naturally occurring chemicals in cocoa beans fight harmful bacteria in the mouth. Chocolate’s ability to deal with bacterias living on the surface of your teeth is so effective that it might be added to toothpastes and mouthwashes one day—minus the sugar, of course.
5) Chocolate = Love
Chocolate contains a chemical called phenylethylamine. Phenylethylamine releases certain “pleasure” endorphins in the brain, which make people feel good all over — similar to how they feel when they’re madly in love. While chocolate might not be a perfect love substitute, it’s one of the best alternates you’ll find produced in mass quantity.
